Elshani: Popovic given 48-hour detention
Deputy Police Director for the North Region, Veton Elshani, told Kosovo Online that Igor Popovic, Assistant Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija in charge of legal affairs, has been placed in 48-hour detention.
"Igor Popovic has been placed in 48-hour detention. The Special Prosecutor’s Office and the Office of the Director for Serious Crimes in Pristina are handling the case," Elshani said briefly, adding that Popovic is being held in custody south of the Ibar River.
Elshani also noted that after the 48-hour detention period expires, Popovic will be brought before a judge.
"The court may decide on deportation or something else, but that is not up to us," Elshani said.
Igor Popovic was detained last night in Kosovo following a statement he made during a memorial service for Serbian victims in Orahovac.
"This is like trying to give a speech on Golgotha in Jerusalem, where Christ suffered. Our brothers perished because KLA terrorists did not want Serbs in these areas, and by executing them, they aimed to intimidate the remaining Serb population into leaving. What’s painful is that the terrorists and the organizers, the perpetrators of the crimes, have never been found or punished all these years, even though we see that for a similar crime, the abduction of Israeli civilians, all of Gaza is being destroyed. Despite all the international investigative teams from UNMIK, EULEX, and the Hague Tribunal, no one has been tried or punished. On the contrary, the KLA is still labeled a liberation organization and freedom fighters," Popovic stated.
