Lama: A non-political figure could be the solution for Kosovo’s future president

Analyst from Pristina, Alma Lama, told Kosovo Online that under the current conditions of deep political divisions, a figure outside of politics might be able to bring parties together and be elected president of Kosovo, but she added that she is not very optimistic about this.

According to Lama, no political figure currently has the two-thirds majority in parliament required by the Constitution to elect the president of Kosovo, a decision that will come up in a few months.

“We still have a few months until the end of the president’s term. The solution could be a non-political figure who might be able to bring parties together, but I’m not very optimistic about this because the divisions are currently very deep. New elections might be a solution, but they will not produce a two-thirds majority on one side either, which is necessary to elect the president. So, consensus is always necessary,” Lama pointed out.

She emphasized that Kosovo is in a deep crisis, since not only does no political figure have the necessary votes in parliament to elect the president of Kosovo, but those votes are also lacking for the election of the speaker of parliament.
