Mazreku: There is no clear position of US institutions on the issue of mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo

Professor of European law from Pristina Avni Mazreku told Kosovo Online that there is still no clear position from official US institutions regarding the Kosovo–Serbia dialogue process and, as he put it, the specific issue of mutual recognition.

US President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, said that his personal opinion is that the idea of mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo is “ridiculous” and that the focus should instead be on economic development. Mazreku stated that Grenell’s position on mutual recognition is a matter of his personal opinion, but that it could also be the US position, as a “hypothetical view.”

Mazreku emphasized that the Trump administration’s stance on European issues, as well as on problems in the Middle East and Far East, differs from that of the previous administration.

“It implies what he also announced during the election campaign, namely the issue of tariffs from an economic standpoint, in the function of using economic mechanisms to resolve political problems. In the previous US administration, we saw a different approach to this matter. There were tendencies toward directly resolving current issues. For Trump, the economic approach comes first, followed by resolving political problems,” Mazreku noted.
