Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu stated that the Serbian community should not fear, but rather welcome the construction of two new bridges over the Ibar River, as they will contribute to better connectivity between South and North Mitrovica.

“Regardless of Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s intentions or the purpose behind the proposal for two new bridges in Mitrovica, the fact remains that this is a real need for the city, due to poor urban planning and the illegal construction of buildings over the past 25 years,” Spahiu told Kosovo Online.

He believes that the construction of two new bridges would ease daily life and traffic for residents in both municipalities and should not cause fear within the Serbian community.

“Should Serbs be afraid of this? They should not be afraid, they should be glad, because if it is about the presence of police or Kosovo institutions in the north, they are already present. One bridge, the one in Bosniak Mahala, is enough for them to do whatever they want. The current situation cannot get worse with the opening of two bridges. It can only get better and make travel easier for people on both sides,” Spahiu said confidently.

Asked how feasible the construction of the two new bridges actually is, Spahiu responded affirmatively.

“One would be located near the North Mitrovica municipality building and would facilitate vehicle traffic between both parts of the city,” Spahiu clarified.
