Zakharova: We will uncompromisingly advocate the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244
Moscow will uncompromisingly advocate the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 on Kosovo, because defending Belgrade's positions is inseparable from preserving the shared history and centuries-old ties between the two peoples, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, Sputnik reported.
Speaking about issues related to the Balkans, Zakharova drew attention to the fact that some young people, due to a lack of historical knowledge, ask whether it is necessary to fight so persistently and for so long to preserve the importance of this resolution, which, she said, confirms Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo.
According to her, the answer to this question lies in the deep historical roots of Russian-Serbian brotherhood.
“When someone from the younger generation today, without knowing the history, says, ‘Listen, how much longer do we need to fight for UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which says that Kosovo is Serbia?’ there is no other answer. We will continue to advocate for it because what we are fighting for today was precisely what the Serbs fought for two centuries ago,” Zakharova said at the Catherine Forum, Sputnik reported.
She added that “Serbian volunteers who come to defend Russia today” are defending not only the principles of justice and international law, but also something inseparably linked to their historical destiny. As an example, she cited “the lands of historical Slavic Serbia in Donbas, today's Luhansk region and the area around Bakhmut, where a Serbian hussar regiment was formed centuries ago to defend our common borders.”
“Everything is so closely intertwined. ‘Internationalism’ is not just a word, it encompasses the destinies of thousands, tens of people over the centuries,” Zakharova said.
