Elek: We are threatened with a humanitarian disaster; we cannot even deliver medicines, let alone weapons

Responding to the statement of British MP Alicia Kearns, who accused the Serbian Orthodox Church of alleged weapon smuggling, specifically claiming that "weapons are smuggled across the border from Serbia into Orthodox churches using ambulance vehicles," Dr. Zlatan Elek, the director of the Clinical Hospital Center in Kosovska Mitrovica, emphasized in an interview with "Novosti" that despite rigorous controls by the Kosovo Police, no weapons of any kind have ever been found in any medical vehicle.

The head of the clinical hospital center in North Mitrovica warns that this institution, which treats patients not only from the north but also from other parts of Kosovo, is facing a humanitarian disaster if the ban on the delivery of medicines and other medical equipment continues.

"We are committed to treating people regardless of their religious or national affiliation, and in our facilities, we treat not only Serbs but also Muslims, Albanians, and Roma, and despite our efforts to perform our duties for the benefit of all patients, it has been prevented by the authorities in Pristina due to the ban on the delivery of medicines, medical supplies, and until recently, even oxygen and saline solution," Dr. Elek emphasized.

He also mentioned that emergency vehicles with "KM" license plates are prohibited from moving, further hindering the provision of medical assistance to patients.

Despite appeals to the international community, Elek states that there has been no response.

"For some time now, we have been warning the international community about the threat of medicine and medical equipment shortages, but so far, no one has reacted," he stated.
