Vasic: We will appeal the court's decision to extend Trajkovic's detention for two months
Sladjan Trajkovic, who was arrested on December 15 in Bosniak Mahala in North Mitrovica, the Basic Court in Pristina extended the detention for another two months, lawyer Dejan Vasic said for Kosovo online and announced the appeal due to the violation of the equality of the parties in the proceedings.
Vasic pointed out that he would seek the measure of house arrest.
"The basic court in Pristina today extended the detention measure for Sladjan Trajkovic for another two months, due to the opinion that he committed the criminal act of war crimes against the civilian population, which we will file an appeal today because the first-instance court did not consider the arguments of the defense, which violated the principle equality of the parties in the proceedings. We will request that the appellate court transform this measure into a measure of house arrest, as has been the practice so far in war crimes trials for persons residing in Kosovo," said Vasic.
Vasic added that he would file an appeal because the arguments of the defense were not accepted.
"First of all, we pointed out positive examples, the eight cases I worked on, in which persons residing in Kosovo were sentenced to house arrest, because there was no danger of escape. On the other hand, I pointed out that the criminal offense of war crimes does not belong in the most serious crimes, because the maximum sentence is 15 years, while the highest degree of punishment is 25 years, which means that this sentence is 10 years below the legal maximum. I requested the house arrest measure due to his health condition," Vasic explained.
