Borrell: We mustn’t wait for November 21 with no solution
The High EU Representative for foreign policy, Josep Borrell, said he expected more flexibility and commitment from Belgrade and Pristina, and November 21 should not be met without a solution.
After the nine-hour long session with the EU ministers, Borrell said that he had informed the ministers about the talks he had in Paris with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti. Borrell reiterated that he expected from the Kosovo Serbs to return to the institutions, and Pristina to postpone the decision on license plates and start implementing agreed agreements, primarily on the formation of a Community with Serb-majority Municipalities.
"We will start meetings with the main negotiators. The Kosovo representatives are arriving tonight. I am ready to convince the leaders to find practical solutions before November 21. We must not reach that date without a solution. We are in a vacuum where the worst can happen and both parties have to show more flexibility", Borrell said.
According to him, the current crisis is the worst one in the last 10 years.
"We expect willingness for solutions to be found, that is the basic prerequisite for the EU membership. The parties should decide whether they want to join the EU or go back to the past", Borrell said.
When asked about the Franco-German proposal, Borrell said that it was a proposal for a solution.
"I believe it is possible to find a solution. The European partners expect it. The proposal is more of a compass for finding a solution", Borrell said.
