Canaj: Berlin would not withdraw Kosovo recognition even if AfD were part of the German government

University professor in Pristina and former diplomat Blerim Canaj says ahead of tomorrow’s elections in Germany that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has a good chance of being part of the next German government, however, he emphasizes that the chances of Germany withdrawing its recognition of Kosovo are "minus 100,000," even if AfD comes to power.

To recall, AfD MPs submitted a request in the Bundestag in 2023 for Berlin to withdraw its recognition of Kosovo.

Canaj, however, argues that Germany, as a serious state, does not make policy "from one day to the next."

"The Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) also claimed they would withdraw Kosovo’s recognition, but the whole world knows that Germany and Austria were among the first to recognize Kosovo. These are just political games," Canaj stated.

He expects that after the elections, the new German government will be led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), with Friedrich Merz as chancellor.

"Whether CDU will form a coalition with AfD or not remains to be seen. Germany will find itself in a political deadlock, much like Kosovo is now," Canaj assessed.

He believes that the new German government will not change its current stance on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, because, as he says, this is a "state strategy."
