Canaj: Conflict in the Balkans benefits Russia; both Albanians and Serbs must be cautious
University professor and diplomat Blerim Canaj stated that Russia has political influence over Serbia, but also emphasized that both Albanians and Serbs should be cautious, as any potential conflict in the Balkans would be in Moscow’s interest.
Commenting on the concerns of Kosovo officials regarding “Russian influence” on Serbia, Canaj said that while such claims are partly used for political purposes, they also reflect a legitimate fear.
“It is well known that Russia has significant political influence in Serbia. It is also known that if there is a conflict anywhere, it would be beneficial for Russia. That is why this issue is used politically, but also, there is justification if there is fear about that influence,” Canaj told Kosovo Online.
The former diplomat considers visits by Serbian officials to Moscow problematic, primarily because of the sanctions imposed on Russia.
“When Russia is under sanctions, Serbia is the only country in Europe that still maintains contact with Russia. Caution is needed regarding that, especially if we understand that any conflict works in Russia’s favor and could be exploited here in the Balkans. Therefore, we all need to be careful. I mean both Albanians and Serbs, all people, should be wary of that influence,” Canaj emphasized.
