Drecun: Decisive week for the direction of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina

The President of the Parliamentary Committee for Kosovo and Metohija, Milovan Drecun, emphasizes that the key message from Serbia's Prime Minister Ana Brnabic during the United Nations Security Council session is a call for reconciliation between the Serbs and the Albanians, also that the upcoming week will be crucial in determining the direction of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, RTS reports.

"But none of the advocates of independent Kosovo paid attention to this idea, which has become a common practice at the UN. The Prime Minister's address is, in fact, a confrontation for Pristina and all members of the Security Council with the facts, as well as the unwillingness of leading Western countries to face the truth," Drecun says.

On the other hand, he notes that the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, used phrases portraying "Kosovo as a democratic state".

"Osmani's talk about an allegedly democratic territory, which for the Serbs has turned into a camp where they are disenfranchised and treated as second-class citizens," Drecun says.

He also assesses that the response from the United States regarding the discontinuation of UNMIK represents a break from the continuity of Resolution 1244.

"UNMIK was present in Kosovo and Metohija based on the Resolution, and now there is a demand for the abolition of civilian presence and the retention of UN military presence. At this stage, the presence of NATO could not be realized differently than through KFOR's presence. So, double standards are at play, and it's the policy of Western countries that see Kosovo as a state and want to pave the way for its unilateral membership," Drecun says.

He emphasizes that it's positive that the UN report on the situation in Kosovo pointed out the terror of Kurti's regime against the Serbs, which is why there is no de-escalation of the conflict.

He also notes that it is good that practically everyone participating in the discussion recognized the need for continuing the dialogue, except Pristina.

"In words, they are in favor of dialogue, but under their conditions, which means that Belgrade should be punished for alleged responsibility for what happened in the village of Banjska and that Belgrade's recognition should be obtained. Pristina supposedly advocates for holding elections in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, but again under special conditions. So, Pristina only declaratively wants de-escalation and the continuation of the dialogue," Drecun emphasizes.

Drecun states that the next week, following the meetings of the "big five" in Belgrade and Pristina and Prime Minister Brnabic's messages, is crucial for deciding the direction of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina according to the new plan of Western countries for Kosovo.

Speaking about the possible formation of the Community of Serb-majority Municipalities, he emphasizes that Belgrade insists on the CSM being established based on the Brussels agreements from 2013 and 2015.

"This is Belgrade's response and message regarding the new plan. It also calls for organizing new elections in the north of Kosovo according to the new plan. However, it is also expected that Belgrade fully implements what they call an agreement, and we call it a proposal. This especially relates to two key points of the proposal that are absolutely unacceptable to us - the acceptance of the false state of Kosovo in international organizations and the provision that establishes our relationship with Pristina based on the principles of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity," Drecun concludes.
