Hovenier: The North is a complicated issue; coordination is needed to avoid a crisis
The United States Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, stated that northern Kosovo is a "complicated issue" and called on the Kosovo Government to coordinate with international allies to avoid a crisis, Koha reports.
During a press conference at the official opening of a business center in Pec, Hovenier expressed the US's commitment to Kosovo's goals.
"The United States remains dedicated, as always, to Kosovo achieving its goals. We stand behind a sovereign, independent, multi-ethnic, democratic Kosovo developing within European and Euro-Atlantic structures. We are working hard towards that. This also means Kosovo asserting its sovereignty. The north is complicated, and the way the Kosovo Government handles the situation is highly sensitive. We want it to be in coordination with international allies to avoid crises that hinder our long journey toward achieving our shared goal," Hovenier stated.
He added that it is difficult to say whether the situation in the north is close to de-escalation, despite the agreement reached yesterday between EU Envoy Miroslav Lajcak and Kosovo negotiator Besnik Bislimi.
Hovenier reiterated that the US expects the full implementation of agreements and the avoidance of troubles, emphasizing that this issue must be urgently resolved.
