Markovic: The EU's second package of measures for Pristina could further restrict funds, and visa liberalization is at risk

In response to announcements from the opposition in Pristina that the EU is preparing a second package of measures against Kosovo, political analyst Igor Markovic from the NGO "Aktiv" in North Mitrovica says that, if true, it will pose a significant problem for Pristina as it will impact access to financial funds designated for economic development.

Markovic says for Kosovo Online that the issue of visa liberalization will also be one of Brussels' strategies to exert pressure on the government in Pristina.

"If the claim by the Kosovo opposition that the EU is preparing a second package of measures for the Kosovo government is true, I assume that the package will entail limiting access to financial funds for countries that want to become EU members. These funds are primarily intended for economic development and are crucial under current economic conditions. I presume that their closure for Pristina would present a major problem. On the other hand, although officials in Brussels have announced that there will be no withdrawal of the decision on visa liberalization, I believe this will be another strategy for the EU to pressure Kurti's government," Markovic says.

On the question of whether the EU's decision on a new package of measures against Kosovo depends on the resumption of dialogue in Brussels on September 14, Markovic says it will not be of crucial importance.

"Considering that it is not yet an official position of Brussels, I'm afraid it won't be of crucial importance for the upcoming meeting. However, we should pay attention to the statements of Brussels officials in recent weeks, among other things, they have announced that any decision by Belgrade or Pristina that goes against what was agreed upon in Ohrid will result in significant pressure from Brussels. In line with this, I strongly believe that Brussels will ultimately convince Pristina to respect what was agreed upon, not only within the Ohrid Agreement but also within the already forgotten Brussels Agreement," Markovic adds.
