Milivojevic: Lajcak's recognition of failure stems from the West's unrealistic plan

Former diplomat Zoran Milivojevic has assessed that the statement of EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue Miroslav Lajcak regarding the failure of their recent diplomatic initiative with US Special Representative Gabriel Escobar clearly shows that their scenario is not realistic, Sputnik reports.

"It is clear that the policies pursued by Pristina deviate from what should be the goal of their Western sponsors at this moment, and this failure should primarily be seen as a failure of the policy and approach they share with the Pristina authorities. Secondly, it is evident that without the Community of Serb Municipalities (CSM), without Serbian demands, and without a genuine path to de-escalation, there is no chance of any changes on the ground," Milivojevic emphasizes.

According to Milivojevic, another crucial aspect is that the platform based on the so-called Ohrid Agreement, which the West insists is a legally binding agreement, clearly has no chance of success because it does not correspond to the actual situation on the ground.

"I see this recognition as a result of such an approach. The support for the Pristina side has obviously failed, and the policies of the Pristina side no longer lead to a continuation of the dialogue, let alone to a political solution that would be in line with the pacification and resolution of the Kosovo issue in the only possible way," Milivojevic explains.

He points out that everything that Serbia and the Serbs have warned about is happening.

"What could give a chance to dialogue and a chance for the situation on the ground to be in the service of peace and stability has not been taken into account. And now, we are practically returning to what is both the beginning and the end of the story, which is the full implementation of the Brussels Agreement according to the provisions defined in 2013/15 as a basis for resolving issues in the future. So, when the CSM is established, new elections can then be held in northern Kosovo that would reflect the real situation. The continuation of the talks would then make sense and lead to normalization of relations," Milivojevic is convinced.

He believes that there is no other formula for further progress if someone truly wants political dialogue, peace, and stability.

"Their assessment coincides with the anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1244. And now, 24 years after the Resolution came into play, it is evident that practically nothing can be changed beyond what is defined in that Resolution. Therefore, Kosovo and Metohija are under the protectorate of the United Nations. We need to return to the political basis for resolving the Kosovo issue," Milivojevic says.
