Montgomery: Vucic is absolutely right that the US and its allies circumvented the UN regarding Kosovo
Former US Ambassador to Belgrade William Montgomery stated in an interview with Kosovo Online that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was correct when he said that the US, along with some of its European allies, had circumvented the United Nations and undertaken the bombing campaign against Serbia in 1999 with NATO.
Montgomery, in his reflection on Vucic's speech during the UN General Assembly, also added that it was true that the same group of countries unilaterally recognized Kosovo's independence, not using the UN.
"The consequence of this is that Putin was able to use this as justification for his use of violence in Ukraine. Absolutely true. The problem is that it is like ringing a bell, and there is no way now to go back. So, our focus is very much on trying to bring this whole region together, to look ahead and work together," Montgomery said.
The American diplomat also emphasized the importance of the role of EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajcak in this.
"I give a lot of credit to Miroslav Lajcak for what he has been patiently doing for years now," Montgomery concluded.
