Pupin Initiative: Serbia-U.S. strategic dialogue a historic turning point

The Pupin Initiative has described the launch of a strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States as a crucial step marking a historic turning point and a long-awaited breakthrough in relations between the two countries and their peoples.

In a statement, the Pupin Initiative said that a new chapter in Serbian-American relations is beginning today.

"From the presentation of the document and initiative to launch a strategic dialogue in Washington at the Pupin Forum in September 2024, followed by its presentation in Belgrade in October of the same year, up to the present day, we at the Pupin Initiative have consistently advocated, at every opportunity, both in Serbia and in the United States, for the establishment of a strategic dialogue," the organization said.

It recalled that the establishment of the Pupin Initiative was guided by a clear vision and objective—to usher in a new era in relations between Serbia and the United States through comprehensive strategic cooperation—and added that it proudly welcomes this first step on that path.

"A strategic dialogue is a diplomatic instrument of United States foreign policy that provides for regular and continuous communication between representatives of two countries on key issues. It establishes clear mechanisms for implementing and monitoring agreed commitments and, by its nature, is similar to the strategic partnerships that Serbia has already been successfully developing. In the year when the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding, this dialogue offers us a unique opportunity to further strengthen and institutionalize the civilizational ties between our two nations. We believe our shared future holds tremendous potential that we can fully realize together," the statement said.

The Pupin Initiative stressed that "our generation bears the responsibility of turning that potential into reality."

"We owe it to our ancestors, who fought side by side in two world wars, as well as to our descendants, to whom we must not leave the burden of past excuses and defeatism. Guided by the vision of Mihajlo Pupin, we are doing everything within our power to help Serbia and the United States write a new, brighter chapter in the history of their relations. Today's step confirms that hard work, dedication, and a clear vision can overcome obstacles and bring lasting benefits to both nations and all our citizens," the statement concluded.

The statement was signed by the President of the Pupin Initiative, Vuk Velebit.

Earlier today, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric announced that Washington had decided to launch a strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States, describing it as one of the most significant developments in bilateral relations in recent years.

He said the first session of the dialogue is scheduled for Friday.

"What will take place on Friday is political history in Serbia-U.S. relations, and I believe it will further strengthen Serbia's economy, benefit its citizens, and enhance the country's international standing and reputation," Djuric said.
