Spahiu: The US stance at the UN Security Council meeting neutral; Kurti will continue as he pleases

What distinguished last night's session of the United Nations Security Council from others was the stance of the United States, which was quite neutral, political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu assessed for Kosovo Online, adding that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti would continue as he pleased regardless of any measures from the US and the EU.

The emergency session of the UN Security Council, it is worth recalling, was convened at the request of Serbia due to the current situation in Kosovo.

The addresses by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti were expected, Spahiu believes.

"The Russian stance was also expected, and what was different from other Security Council sessions was the stance of the United States, which was quite neutral towards the parties and which, I think, happened for the first time at such a session. The stance of Great Britain was more favorable to Kosovo, and France's stance was somewhere between Britain and the US, so that's the only novelty from what happened at previous sessions. The other thing is that for the first time, President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti were openly in a debate that the whole world could see," Spahiu said.

He believes that Kurti will continue as he pleases, regardless of any measures from the US and the EU, and the only way forward, he argues, is to implement the agreement based on the Franco-German plan as soon as possible.

"I think that is Prime Minister Kurti's intention, which is why he is now acting in that direction, abolishing parallel municipalities, abolishing the dinar as a means of payment, although that decision was made long ago 25 years ago, it has been tolerated until now. Prime Minister Kurti intends to encourage Serbia to adhere to the Franco-German plan as soon as possible and to implement it because Kosovo is losing precious time from the non-implementation of that plan. Therefore, the Community of Serb-majority Municipalities, which has already been accepted by Prime Minister Kurti, is waiting to be introduced at the moment when permanent missions of Serbia will be established in Pristina and Kosovo in Belgrade, as a tacit recognition of Kosovo by Serbia," Spahiu said.
