European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi said today in Belgrade that the leader of Serbia needed to be at the table during the European Union-Western Balkans summit in Tirana on December 6, Pink reports.

"The enlargement process is one of the three priorities of EU leaders, and that is the reason why next week we have a summit in Tirana, where our leaders will come to discuss the region. We need Serbia, the leader of Serbia who will sit at the table. I don't have to say how much public attention is there now when it comes to relations between the EU and Serbia," Varhelyi said.

As he pointed out, the only real long-term solution was membership in the Union.

"We must work together on long-term strategic ties, act together when we have common challenges, and perhaps even when the challenges are not common. In June, the leaders confirmed their unanimous commitment to the perspective of membership for the entire Balkan region, because for us it is not only a geopolitical priority, rather, it is the basic fundamental connection for the entire continent," Varhelyi stated.
