Does the opposition in Pristina have a plan to topple Kurti's government?

Does the opposition in Kosovo have a plan on how to depose Albin Kurti – this is a question that is being asked these days while there are numerous accusations against the Kosovo Prime Minister for accepting the European proposal on the normalization of relations with Belgrade.

The largest opposition parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), criticize Kurti, while the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj, has praised the leader of Self-Determination in recent weeks. Fatmir Limaj, the leader of the Social Democratic Initiative, which could soon unite with PDK, says that Kurti is a "political plasticine with which you can do whatever you want" and that he brought Kosovo to a "take it or leave it" situation.

Political analyst Dardan Sejdiu says for Kosovo Online that "the Kosovo opposition's plan is not very clear."

"Ramush Haradinaj unconditionally supports the proposed solution, whereas Lumir Abdixhiku strongly criticizes Albin Kurti. And whether or not there is an alternative for Kurti in Kosovo, Kosovo voters will know best when the time comes," Sejdiu says.

He adds that the opposition criticizes the government in every democratic country, and so does the opposition in Kosovo.

"It's all part of the process, in my opinion. Kurti is the prime minister who won over 50 percent of the vote, and it's natural for the opposition to look for something to criticize in every situation. This is realistic because when you rule, you make mistakes, and those mistakes should be criticized.  Is there, however, genuine opposition in Kosovo? I believe there is, but whether that opposition is now in a position to win the elections remains to be seen," Sejdiu points out.

Analyst Dejan Vuk Stankovic says for Kosovo Online that the opposition in Kosovo has a chance to topple Kurti from power only if they have political support from abroad.

"Kurti did poorly in the local elections because people are simply dissatisfied with his actions regarding concrete social challenges. At this moment, change can be made only with the help of a foreign factor. As far as I can tell, Kurti is in a hot-cold position primarily with the United States, which was unhappy with him, but recently stated that they consider him a good collaborator. He faced criticism earlier primarily for his rejection of the CSM. It should not be forgotten that Kurti had already been replaced by the will of the US, specifically Richard Grenell, who was extremely influential in Donald Trump's administration, and before that, Haradinaj had suffered a similar fate," Stankovic notes.

However, he does not believe that any of the Albanian politicians in Kosovo would be more constructive toward the Serbs.

"Even if Escobar and Lajcak decide that Kurti's time is up, the problem with Kosovo's politicians is not who will be in the prime minister's chair, but that I doubt that a more liberal Albanian politician would come who would have a more constructive attitude towards the Serbs in Kosovo and therefore also towards Serbia. Kurti largely plays the nationalist card, and I don't see anyone more measured than him," Stankovic says.
