Defense attorney of the arrested Aca Dejanovic from Grncare, lawyer Nikola Todorovic, stated that the prosecution’s request to order detention for Dejanovic is completely unfounded, as there are no grounds to believe he could flee or influence witnesses. He emphasized that the defense has strong arguments that there is no reasonable suspicion that Dejanovic committed the criminal offense he is accused of.

Following the hearing on the motion for detention, Todorovic specified that, according to the proposal of the Special Prosecution, Dejanovic is suspected of having committed a war crime against the civilian population during the period of armed conflict in 1999.

“They claim there is reasonable suspicion. We are certain that such suspicion does not exist, which we also stated before the court. We presented clear evidence and facts that no such suspicion exists, and that he was not present at the location for which he is being accused,” Todorovic stated.

He also pointed out that Dejanovic has been living in Kosovo for the past 25 years, as well as before that, and has never left, which works in his favor as it confirms that he was not hiding or concealing anything.

“We presented all of this. It is now up to the court to decide whether to order detention. We believe and have strong arguments that he was not present at that time and that there is no reasonable suspicion that he committed such a criminal offense, nor are there grounds for ordering detention, such as risk of flight or influencing witnesses. I believe the prosecution’s proposal is completely unfounded, but we will wait for the court’s decision. We hope that the court will take our arguments into account and that Aca Dejanovic will be released,” attorney Todorovic said.

He reiterated that at the time of the alleged offense, which reportedly took place in the vicinity of Kacanik, Dejanovic was not working there but was in another location.

“That is certainly a straightforward piece of evidence that the accusations against him are unfounded,” Todorovic added.
