Analysts: EU and US want a quick solution in the dialogue; Kosovo a political point for the upcoming elections

Experts in political affairs say for Kurir that the European Union and the United States are in a hurry to resolve the Kosovo issue, as the next year is an election year for both the EU and the US.

It is clear that Europe and the US are trying to quickly resolve the Kosovo issue, Srdjan Graovac from the Center for Social Stability says, and he believes that new pressure will be applied to Serbia to achieve this goal.

"European diplomats, supported by Americans, want to resolve this issue by the end of this year, or at the latest, in the first few months of next year, because next year is an election year for Europe. Therefore, the current European administration must achieve some foreign policy gain that will strengthen their positions before the upcoming European elections, and Kosovo is the political point they're counting on," Graovac said.

The same goes for the US administration, according to Graovac, and it seems that they are not in such a hurry because they have elections only at the end of next year.

"But, in addition to all of this, there is a perhaps more important reason for the rush and the urgent desire to resolve the Kosovo issue, and that is the complicating situation in the international geopolitical arena. The world is shaken, and the West wants to wrap up this area as theirs as soon as possible, and resolving the Kosovo problem is a prerequisite for that. So, the pressure will increase for political and strategic reasons," Graovac said.

Dejan Miletic from the Center for the Study of Globalization points out that, although it appears that we are moving away from forming the CSM, there is nothing to talk about without it.

He sees the biggest failure of European representatives in the fact that CSM has not been formed even ten years after reaching an agreement.

"We are used to the rhetorical equating of Belgrade and Pristina, and it has less and less effect, double standards will not pass. However, we should be cautious because there are people with numbered days who want to expedite the solution with some pressure, but these are already individuals facing elections. Both the EU and Lajcak, Borrell... have elections coming up, and they have already been embarrassed because they haven't implemented the agreement in which the EU mediated, and that is precisely the CSM. Everything else is counterproductive and can only negatively affect further dialogue," Miletic said.

The President of the Parliamentary Committee for Kosovo and Metohija, Milovan Drecun, emphasizes that the upcoming elections in the US and the EU are certainly a reason for the West to try to resolve the Kosovo issue quickly, if possible.

"And that with one single goal, to force Belgrade to recognize the false state of Kosovo, first de facto and then de jure. This is why all these accelerated diplomatic activities and demands are happening. But the key is that they seek recognition, while on the other hand, it is clear that Belgrade will not accept that, so there will be no progress in the dialogue," Drecun concluded.
