Analysts: Even if Self-Determination and LDK reach an agreement, it does not mean that Kosovo will get a president

An agreement between the Self-Determination Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo could be close, but securing the votes and support needed to elect the president of Kosovo will still be problematic, analysts warn, Gazeta Blic reports.

Analysts doubt that the presidential candidate will be able to secure the necessary votes in the Kosovo Assembly.

Political analyst Sadik Zeqiri said that there may be members of the LDK who will not support the candidate proposed by the Self-Determination Movement. According to him, the time factor could be decisive.

Analyst Ejup Gojnovci is concerned by the fact that the names of presidential candidates are changing from one meeting to the next.

Gojnovci says that even if the two political entities reach an agreement on the principles and the name of the candidate, this does not automatically mean that Kosovo will get a new president.

“The Democratic League of Kosovo cannot speak for or guarantee all the numbers, that is, the votes of all its members of parliament in the Assembly. Therefore, I think the critical day will be when we find out whether we will have a president or not. That will be the day when the candidate’s name is put to a vote,” he said, Gazeta Blic reports.

Over the coming week, it remains to be seen whether the meetings between the Self-Determination Movement and the LDK will result in a concrete agreement and whether that agreement will secure the votes needed to elect a new president.

Following the latest meeting between Self-Determination Movement leader Albin Kurti and LDK President Lumir Abdixhiku, acting president Albulena Haxhiu said she hoped an agreement would be reached as soon as possible.

“I want the agreement to be concluded as soon as possible, because it is very important that we move forward. Let us hope that the coming week will be decisive for this important process,” Haxhiu said.
