Angili: KFOR has a key role in preserving security in Kosovo, stability in the Balkans is in Turkey's interest

Turkey's Ambassador to Kosovo, Sabri Tunc Angili, has stated that KFOR has a key and irreplaceable role in maintaining security in Kosovo and that it also has an important role in the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia, Dukagjini reports.

"Stability and peace in the Balkans are very important to Turkey for two reasons. First, we have deep connections with the Balkans, and any developments here will be felt in the hearts of people in Turkey. Second, we have a partnership with Europe, and trade routes pass through the Balkans, so stability in the region is in Turkey's interest," Angili said.

He reminded that Turkey had recently sent an additional 500 soldiers to Kosovo, stating that it had been done at NATO's request.

"As the second-largest army in NATO, Turkey naturally contributes to NATO operations and KFOR. We believe that KFOR is irreplaceable for security in Kosovo, and it has played an important role in the past and continues to play an important role in providing a safe environment for the progress of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia," Angili added.

Regarding the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Angili believes that it is important for both sides to contribute to the process and that the strategic interest of Kosovo in the dialogue is to achieve a long-term solution.

As he pointed out, both sides have not implemented parts of the agreements, but he doesn't see a risk of conflict.

"In my opinion, Serbia has not implemented Article 4 of the Brussels Agreement, and Kosovo has not fulfilled Article 7 for the CSM. I believe that Turkey can contribute to this process. We have asked for this to be done by continuing the dialogue led by the EU," Angili said.

He added that it was in the interest of both Kosovo and Serbia to find a solution.

"Both leaders say they want peace and to find a solution. In the end, both countries want to integrate. As a strategic partner of Kosovo, Turkey considers that a long-term solution for dialogue is in the strategic interest of Kosovo," Angili stated.

He emphasized that stability must be maintained, as instability would have negative effects on the Balkans.

"We believe that de-escalation is important for Kosovo to achieve its goals of membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions, but it is not an easy path. There will be many ups and downs, and necessary measures are required. Sometimes difficult decisions must be made, but I think it is essential for Kosovo and in the interest of tourism. If we fail to maintain stability, it will have a general effect on the Balkans, too. As you know, there is a war in Ukraine, and we see global ramifications, making stability in the Balkans even more important now," Angili concluded.
