The European Union assessed that the draft of the Community of Serb-majority Statute, presented by its representatives on October 21, is the best possible and that Kosovo had had the opportunity to draft it independently in the past 10 years, Koha reports.

Responding to the statement of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who said a few days ago that he could draft a modern European statute, the EU stated that Kosovo had already had that opportunity.

"Kosovo has had the opportunity over the past 10 years to submit a proposal for the Community. In this advanced stage of the process, where the establishment of the Community is expected to start soon, Kosovo is invited to provide its comments and suggestions on the draft", the EU said in a response to Koha.

The EU stated that the draft law already presented to Kurti was a "modern European way of addressing the sensitive issue of minority protection".

"As we have said many times, the European draft of the statute presented to Prime Minister Kurti on October 21 by EU representative Lajcak and diplomatic advisers to the French President, German Chancellor, and Italian Prime Minister, along with US Envoy Escobar, represents a modern European way of addressing the sensitive issue of minority protection. The EU and its partners believe that this is the best possible way to address the issue for both sides. We expect both sides to continue discussions based on this draft", the response stated.
