Kolakovic: Every special envoy for the Balkans, including Sarrazin, has an agenda they are pursuing

Dr. Aleksandra Kolakovic, a senior researcher and historian, says for Kosovo Online that every Special Envoy for the Western Balkans has a clearly defined agenda they are pursuing and that the frequent visits of the German envoy Manuel Sarrazin to Kosovo following the incident in Banjska could be explained in that context.

Sarrazin visited Kosovo twice after the events in Banjska, where he met with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and President Vjosa Osmani. He arrived in Pristina immediately after the tragic events in Banjska on September 24, when three Serbs and an Albanian policeman were killed, and then again a few days later on October 1.

"Every special envoy clearly has a specific agenda they are pursuing, and their work style varies in that context. Since they are appointed due to specific circumstances and problems in the region, and the Kosovo and Metohija area is currently extremely important, it is logical that Sarrazin wants to be present on the ground," Kolakovic says.

She adds that it is certain that these are his duties and that his work is evidently aligned with them.

"We will see how this further develops. What we always need to keep in mind is that the states we mention, which have special envoys, have recognized Kosovo's independence, and that is their primary position – the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. So, it is evident that they are conducting activities in line with their foreign policies," Kolakovic emphasizes.
