European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos reiterated today that the recent amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers were unacceptable and represented a serious step backward on Kosovo’s path toward the EU.

In a post on the social media platform X, Kos said that she had spoken with Kosovo’s chief negotiator on the path toward EU integration and noted that, despite institutional instability over the past two years, Kosovo had made progress on reforms related to the rule of law and the Growth Plan.

She also pointed out that significant progress had been made toward joining the SEPA system.

“However, the recent amendments to the Law on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers are unacceptable. Their adoption and implementation would be contrary to the commitments Kosovo has undertaken toward the EU. This would represent a serious step backward on Kosovo’s path toward the EU,” the European Commissioner stressed.

Kos emphasized that respect for the rule of law and independent judicial institutions was essential in preparing the next steps on Kosovo’s path toward the EU.

Several days ago, Kos also said that the amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers were unacceptable to the EU. A similar message came from the Union itself, which noted that the adoption of the amendments was contrary to Kosovo’s international obligations and called on Pristina to honor those commitments in order to safeguard the independence of the institution.
