Martens: The Franco-German proposal is not serious; I see no motivation for either Serbia or Kosovo to agree to it

There was neither motivation nor rewards for Belgrade and Pristina if they reached an agreement on Kosovo, the journalist of "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" Michael Martens said, Nova reports.

"I think that whole Franco-German proposal is not very serious, because I don't see the motivation for either Serbia or Kosovo to agree to it. You can talk and negotiate and have meetings, but I don't see what the result will be, because the main result and the goal that the EU promises - there is no EU membership for either Serbia or Kosovo, and if that doesn't exist then I don't know what Western politicians expect. I don't see a serious motivation for either Vucic or Kurti to take a serious step forward," Martens said in the "Medju nama" show.

Martens also states that he does not see what pressure the EU can currently exert on Kosovo or Serbia.

"I am not sure that there will be sanctions. There is no such thing against Dodik, so why will it be against Vucic - especially since they currently think that Kurti is to blame for the lack of results. I am not sure that there will be any results, neither in a positive nor in a negative sense. We're just wasting time," Martens says.

Martens pointed out that he did not see what the rewards would be for Belgrade and Pristina if they reached an agreement, but that it would be good if there were some kind of reward.

"If you want a politician to make a compromise, you have to give him something. And I don't see that, they came to Pristina and Belgrade empty-handed. Neither Vucic nor Kurti will openly tell them - you have nothing and I'm not going to agree to your idea, because it wouldn't be very smart," Martens concluded.
