Muhaxhiri: Parties are turning to the Jashari family because they lack strategies to improve the quality of Kosovo’s society
Political analyst Artan Muhaxhiri believes it is entirely appropriate that the Jashari family has taken a negative stance toward becoming involved in what he describes as “dirty politics.” He emphasizes that this now creates a problem for Prime Minister Albin Kurti and opposition leaders, who must find another suitable presidential candidate if Vjosa Osmani, the current president, is not their first choice.
Muhaxhiri assesses that it is improper for the process of electing a new president to be conducted in a non-transparent manner, given that everyone knew the deadline for this would arrive. He adds that pressure will intensify in the coming days.
“They had all the time in the world to find an appropriate candidate, to discuss potential politicians who could fill the position of the new President of Kosovo. This process will affect whoever becomes president, because there will be consequences stemming from being elected in this way, and that is not good,” Muhaxhiri told Kosovo Online.
As for a presidential candidate from the Jashari family, he says the topic always arises because it is symbolically the most powerful family in Kosovo. Political parties turn to it because they lack any strategy for improving the quality of Kosovo’s society, its prosperity, and for taking important steps in the economy and attracting foreign investment.
“The Jashari family and the KLA have the greatest moral merit, and it is natural that parties want to capitalize on that, because it is a safe card in their deck and there is always absolutely unified respect and appreciation within Kosovo’s society for the Jashari family due to their sacrifice,” he notes.
He believes that members of this family should not enter what he calls the typical style of Balkan politics, as they would lose the aura they currently enjoy in Kosovo’s society.
“This is a very dangerous political game—what if it ends badly for the image of the Jashari family? The symbolic image is one thing, while the dirty politics we are accustomed to dealing with is an entirely different level of operation. I do not think it is good to mix these two levels,” Muhaxhiri says.
