Petkovic calls for urgent EU and US action to stop Kurti

In response to Pristina's attempt to forcibly evict Serbian institutions from a building in the Bosniak Mahala, the Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petkovic, has sent a diplomatic note appealing to international actors, the EU, and the US, to prevent Albin Kurti from unilateral actions that could lead to further instability, as reported by "The Pavlovic Today."

In the diplomatic note seen by "The Pavlovic Today," Petkovic calls for urgent action from the EU and the US to urge Kurti to immediately and permanently refrain from any attempts to take control of the facilities housing Serbian institutions.

"Pristina is the only party pushing for conflicts and instability. It would be tragic if Pristina managed to achieve that against the wishes and will of all citizens of North Mitrovica, the entire north, as well as Belgrade and the entire international community, who have been working for months to repair the damage caused by Pristina's destructive actions and ensure a peaceful life for ordinary people," Petkovic stated in the note.

"Pavlovic Today" has reached out to the State Department for comment on the steps taken by the Biden administration to de-escalate the situation in Kosovo.

The text notes that tensions in northern Kosovo have escalated as the September 8 deadline approaches, which is the deadline for the eviction of Serbian institutions from their premises in the Bosniak Mahala.

As stated, this contentious deadline "with the potential to spark further unrest in the region" stems from the controversial decision of Mayor Erden Atiq, who secured his position with only a few hundred votes in the elections.

The initial deadline for the eviction of Serbian institutions was postponed by two weeks due to concerns from EU and US officials, providing only temporary relief while the situation remains unstable as the new deadline approaches.

However, it appears that Prime Minister Kurti's government intends to bypass the agreed-upon Ohrid Agreement, which envisions the implementation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, and resort to force that could potentially destabilize northern Kosovo and the wider region, "The Pavlovic Today" reports.
