The spokesperson of the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Peter Stano, said that "now it is crucial that both sides avoid escalation, which requires immediate actions from both sides - Kosovo not to start issuing fines and Serbia not to issue new KM plates", N1 reports.

Stano pointed out "any claims that the EU is abandoning the proposal for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, supported by Germany, France and the USA, are incorrect".

"The EU continues to stand fully behind this proposal and encourages the two sides to agree to the text as soon as they are ready to prove to the international community that they are capable of accepting European solutions. It is now crucial that both sides avoid escalation, which requires immediate action by both sides - "Kosovo should not start issuing fines and Serbia should not issue new KM plates. There can be no negotiations on normalization with the threat of violence present," Stano said in a statement.
