Stoltenberg: NATO strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina; we are concerned about divisive rhetoric

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated today in Sarajevo, at the beginning of a four-day visit to the Western Balkans, that the Alliance strongly supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Today, we discussed the security situation in your country and the region. Allies strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of your country. We are concerned about secessionist and divisive rhetoric, as well as foreign interference, including from Russia," Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg mentioned that these challenges threatened to undermine stability and hamper reforms, stating that all political leaders must work towards unity and progress.

As he stated, NATO is "extremely committed to stability and security in the Western Balkans."

"Therefore, we deepen our cooperation and political dialogue. NATO Headquarters Sarajevo supports the EU Althea Mission. NATO and its allies remain fully committed to the success of that mission and welcome the extension of the mandate. We support your reform efforts, including the package to build defense capabilities," the NATO Secretary-General stated.

Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Borjana Kristo, thanked the NATO Secretary-General for the visit, stating the symbolism that Stoltenberg had begun his four-day visit to the Western Balkans with a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"This confirms our dedication and commitment to building peace, mutual dialogue, and stability in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the countries of the region," Kristo said, adding that the meeting had been productive and constructive.

"We discussed issues of common interest for cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO, related to stability and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. Cooperation with NATO provides us with an opportunity to enhance security and strengthen defense capabilities," Kristo said.

During his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of a tour of the Western Balkans, Stoltenberg will visit the NATO headquarters in Sarajevo and meet with military leaders and representatives of the international community.

After that, Stoltenberg will travel to Pristina, and tomorrow is planned for a visit to Belgrade, followed by a trip to North Macedonia.
