Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated today after a meeting in Brussels that if Albanian mayors resigned, he would do his best to engage with Serbs regarding their participation in elections in northern Kosovo.

"I cannot promise on behalf of the Serbs, but I said I would do my best. I don't know what to tell you because all these topics do not really exist now," Vucic said.

According to Vucic, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti received a response regarding elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo from United States Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar, as well as in Brussels, and the response suggested that the best way to reach these elections is the resignation of mayors.

As Vucic told reporters in Brussels, the entire process of petitions and everything else would take too long.

"This was deliberately done to avoid the core problem. Someone deliberately did this because Kurti says he has no intention of giving up his two mayors and that he will give up everything for them. This is an approach I don't understand, but I have said I am ready to talk to Serbs to contribute to de-escalation," Vucic said.

The elections, he added, were not a topic at today's meetings; they were discussed, but they were not the main topic.
