In five years, 25,000 people renounced their Kosovo citizenship, 4,708 of them in the past 12 months
In five years, 25,000 people renounced their Kosovo citizenship, while in 2022 alone, that number is 4,708, reports Ekonomia online.
According to the data of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, from January 1 to December 19, 2022, the number of those who renounced their Kosovo citizenship is 4,708, which is less than in the same period in 2021, when 4,787 citizens of Kosovo renounced their citizenship.
"Out of this number, 2,346 are men and 2,362 women," said the spokeswoman for the Kosovo Ministry of Interior Affairs, Nora Fetoshi.
Fetoshi says that the obvious reasons why citizens renounce their citizenship are primarily that many countries of the European Union do not allow dual citizenship, including some countries that are not part of the EU.
"Considering that a large number of Kosovo citizens have been living in EU countries for years, and a large number of them were born in those countries and thus automatically obtained the right to acquire citizenship, they are obliged to renounce their previous citizenship if they want to acquire the citizenship of that country", she said.
She adds that during 2022, a large number of citizens received the citizenship of Kosovo.
"In 2022, 574 people acquired citizenship," Fetoshi said.
