Andric Rakic: The Kosovo Post will not be able to provide necessary services to the Serbs in the north

Opening of the Kosovo Post in municipalities with a Serbian majority will have no impact on the citizens in northern Kosovo because it will not be able to provide the services they need, pointed out Milica Andric Rakic, Program Manager of the NGO Social Initiative.

"The Kosovo Post does not communicate with the Serbian Post, so without an agreement, no one can send a letter to Belgrade through that post office or receive a letter from Belgrade in Mitrovica," Andric Rakic told Danas.

She emphasized that the Kosovo Post has already been available to citizens just 400 meters away from the one announced to open, in South Mitrovica. However, she added that citizens' needs are mostly directed towards Serbia or for shipments from Serbia, not the rest of Kosovo.

She highlighted a particular problem—the fact that the Kosovo Post cannot deliver or process payments for Serbian pensions and social benefits.

Although Kosovo Post offices will be opened in the north, the services they can provide to citizens in the north are limited, so Serbs from Kosovo will still have to travel to central Serbia.

As an example, Andric Rakic mentioned that she had to send a shipment to Belgrade from Raska.

"We used the post office in South Mitrovica a couple of times when sending complaints to the Ombudsman or criminal charges to prosecutors outside Mitrovica," she said.

However, the needs of ordinary citizens for the Kosovo Post are limited to once or twice a year, while the need for the Serbian Post is almost daily, Andric Rakic concluded.
