Cardinal Nemet: No indication that the Vatican will recognize Kosovo
The Bishop of Belgrade, Cardinal Ladislav Nemet, stated that there is no indication the Vatican will recognize the independence of Kosovo, Nova reports.
The Vatican recently reaffirmed that it does not recognize Kosovo's independence and supports dialogue instead.
“There are no signs that the Vatican will recognize Kosovo. The Vatican is known for taking its time to consider decisions, but I think it’s important that Serbia, and the Serbian Orthodox Church, also show themselves as partners in dialogue with the Holy See and the Vatican,” Nemet said.
On May 21, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo had appointed Luigi Bianco as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia, who also serves as the delegate to Kosovo.
It was also noted that there have recently been repeated instances of violence and conflict in Kosovo, particularly in the Serb-majority north.
“UNESCO considers that Christian Orthodox cultural heritage is under threat,” the statement added.
The Bishop of Belgrade also commented on how an American managed to “slip under the radar” and become Pope, despite the clear position that this should not be allowed.
“American citizenship played no role in the election of Pope Leo. Pope Francis, for instance, tried to mediate peace talks in global hotspots like Ukraine and Gaza while wars were escalating. The situation has now changed, and I hope for a more positive approach to peace negotiations and dialogue. Pope Leo is calmer, more composed. Pope Francis was completely free and spontaneous. Leo XIV is a Yank, a real gentleman, but he thinks carefully and then decides. In my opinion, he will be a man of decisions,” Nemet concluded.
