Elshani: We will open the bridge on the Ibar soon
Deputy Commander of the Kosovo Police for the Northern Region, Veton Elshani, stated that the bridge on the Ibar River would soon be opened, Teve1 reported.
Elshani said that discussions were ongoing with superiors on how this could be accomplished.
"I believe it is only a matter of time before this bridge is opened and how it will be opened. We once mentioned that there is a possibility of opening the bridge, but we are discussing with our superiors on how to do it. I believe that there is no longer any reason for the citizens of the north to worry. The manner in which it will be opened is slightly different, but I believe we will open the bridge soon," he said.
In April, the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly decided to open the Ibar bridge to vehicular traffic, but this announcement was met with numerous sharp reactions due to the current security situation in the north, both from citizens of North Mitrovica, who expressed concerns about their safety, and from representatives of the international community.
EU Special Envoy Miroslav Lajcak, commenting on this decision, emphasized that it was not the right time to open the bridge on the Ibar, while KFOR stated that this issue needed to be resolved through political dialogue.
The opening of the main bridge to traffic is stipulated by the agreement on the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, as part of the so-called "bridge revitalization."
