Gecaj: Trump tested the EU with statements about Greenland, it will not have impact on Kosovo
Security expert and retired colonel Hysen Gecaj believes that the issue of Greenland is closely tied to US interests and that Donald Trump’s statements about military intervention were intended to test the EU. Speaking to Kosovo Online, he assessed that this will not affect Kosovo.
“The Greenland issue is closely linked to US interests due to the American airbase that controls the territory, serving to reduce Chinese and Russian influence. Trump made his statement before taking office as US president, and it was a way to test the reactions of Greenland, Denmark, and the European Union. I do not believe that Trump would seriously attempt any military action,” Gecaj explained.
He believes that Trump would be more likely to seek an agreement with the European Union and Denmark to solidify control over Greenland.
“Climate change is uncovering many resources in that region, and all those mineral riches are highly important and interesting to the United States. I see Trump’s statement more as an expression of interest in strengthening control over that territory rather than an intention to take any radical measures, especially not military ones,” the analyst from Pristina stated.
Gecaj emphasizes that the Kosovo issue and Greenland have no direct connection, adding that Ukraine might have a greater impact on Kosovo.
“There could be discussions between Russia and the US, leading to parallels being drawn between Donbas and those regions in Ukraine and Kosovo, which might have some influence on us. I hope that the major powers will adopt a more moderate approach to resolving international disputes and that small nations will somehow navigate through, as they are always the victims of great powers, whether attacked directly or indirectly, as is the case now between Kosovo and Serbia, where Russian, Chinese, and American forces are involved,” Gecaj concluded.
