Gerxhaliu: Politicians must not think only about power, Kosovo does not have the luxury of being without institutions
Former President of the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, Safet Gerxhaliu, stated that Kosovo does not have the luxury of being without institutions since the February elections, and that politicians must not focus solely on power, but rather on the well-being of citizens. He emphasized that the events in the parliament are not contributing to political stability, economic development, social peace, or the acceleration of the integration process.
Gerxhaliu told Kosovo Online that the current situation in the Assembly is damaging Kosovo's image.
“I believe that the Western Balkans and Europe are more of a 'collateral' than a target in the silent war between China and the US, but the consequences are definitely here. I don’t think Kosovo has the luxury to still be without institutions after the February 9 elections. What is happening in the Assembly does not benefit political stability, economic development, social peace, or the speeding up of integration processes,” he said.
Gerxhaliu emphasized that Kosovo’s image is being undermined and that political parties must change their approach and "work much more for the country and the people than for the fight for power."
“We are facing major challenges. We have sanctions – EU measures in place, an open dialogue with Serbia that has turned into a marathon with no final solution, and we have serious problems with electricity and the economic situation. Therefore, if someone truly wants to contribute to Kosovo and the future of the citizens living here, they must think much more about the people and the state, not just about power,” he said.
He stressed that forming institutions as soon as possible is essential, reminding that local elections are coming up in October.
“We are neither Belgium nor the Netherlands, we cannot function without a government. There are too many accumulated problems. Therefore, the sooner the better, because this is a time when we must show seriousness, both to the region and to Europe,” he concluded.
