Gudzic: The Patriarch addressed the Pope because it is assumed that the Vatican can contribute to improving the position of Serbs
Historian Aleksandar Gudzic says that the Vatican has influence over countries of the Catholic world, and that this is why Pope Leo XIV was among those to whom Serbian Patriarch Porfirije addressed himself ahead of the start of the implementation of the Law on Foreigners in Kosovo, as it is assumed that the Vatican can help improve the position of Serbs in Kosovo.
“The Pope is influential in the world, especially in the Catholic world, and the Vatican has influence over countries of the Catholic world. The logic and assumption of the Patriarch is that this can significantly contribute to improving the position of Serbs in Kosovo,” Gudzic told Kosovo Online.
At the same time, he recalls the fact that the Vatican has not recognized Kosovo.
“The Patriarch’s calculation is that an appeal to the Vatican at this moment will help improve the position of Serbs, and in that context his decision to address the Pope and the Vatican for help should be viewed,” Gudzic assesses.
Patriarch Porfirije, ahead of the start of the implementation of the Law on Foreigners on March 13, sent letters to Pope Leo XIV, as well as to numerous statesmen, in which he pointed out the consequences that the implementation of this regulation could produce.
