On this day in 1999, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1244, which confirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and thereby also of the Republic of Serbia as its legal successor, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

As noted, Resolution 1244 was adopted “in the context of ending the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija, with a mandate to ensure the presence of the United Nations, the return of displaced persons and refugees, and the full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia.”

“The Republic of Serbia remains firmly committed to international law, the principles of the UN Charter, and the foundations of the international legal order. We are proud to belong to the group of states dedicated to upholding these principles, including the imperative of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty, both our own and that of all other UN member states,” the statement emphasizes.

The Ministry adds that in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Serbia relies on Resolution 1244, thereby upholding the universal norms that must apply equally to all.
