Mitic: Meetings in New York an opportunity to emphasize that there is no solution for Kosovo without UN Security Council

Aleksandar Mitic, a research associate at the Institute for International Politics and Economics, stated for Kosovo Online that the United Nations General Assembly was an exceptional opportunity for meetings between the Serbian state leadership and a large number of world officials and that during these encounters, Serbia could once again present its positions on numerous issues, especially the Kosovo issue.

Mitic points out that meetings in New York have been very important in previous years concerning Kosovo.

"We have used them in previous years for some very important meetings that later assisted us in the process of derecognition and various other initiatives related to the Kosovo and Metohija question, as well as for other important topics," Mitic recalls.

He also notes that one or even two sessions of the UN Security Council on Kosovo are expected in the near future.

"We are expecting a regular session of the UN Security Council dedicated to Kosovo and Metohija soon. Still, there is also discussion about the idea proposed by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic regarding a special session of the UN Security Council on Kosovo in the next three months, i.e., after the countries that do not recognize Kosovo take over the presidency of the UN Security Council, namely Brazil, China, and Ecuador. Because one, potentially two, sessions of the UN Security Council on this issue are expected, I do not expect it to be a significant topic during the General Assembly itself. Still, on the sidelines, it is an exceptional opportunity to present our views," he emphasizes.

He emphasizes that Serbia must demonstrate that the UN is where the Kosovo issue should be resolved.

"Regardless of previous mistakes made when transferring the process to the European Union, UN Security Council Resolution 1244 is valid and more relevant than ever. The place to resolve this issue is not Kranj, Brijuni, Ohrid, or Brussels, but New York and the UN Security Council. Without a satisfactory solution in the UN Security Council, it will not be possible to resolve the issue of the status of Kosovo and Metohija," Mitic concludes.

He does not expect Kosovo to be among the top topics discussed during the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly, even though it should be, as he says.

"Given the dominant themes at the United Nations General Assembly, considering the geopolitical context in which we find ourselves, I do not expect the Kosovo issue to be prominent. It will not be at the top, although it should be, considering that many principles related to resolving the conflict in Ukraine are directly connected to the Kosovo and Metohija case. Western states do not want to admit this, and I do not expect them to accept a debate on this topic," Mitic said.
