Mitic: Uncertainty over the election of the President of Kosovo is a coordinated game of key political actors
Senior research associate at the Institute of International Politics and Economics in Belgrade, Aleksandar Mitic, assessed that the uncertainty surrounding the election of the President is a “coordinated game” between key political actors in Kosovo, but pointed out that Vjosa Osmani’s status in the West is causing concern for Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
Mitic said that the defeated opposition would benefit the most from new snap elections, while Kurti is currently in a “comfortable position,” which, according to him, he has no need to sacrifice.
Speaking about Osmani, Mitic noted that, given the status she enjoys in the West, especially in Washington, she may have become too powerful for Kurti’s liking.
“The fact is that in the past few months she was the only one with a full mandate, while the other institutions had technical mandates, and she used that to the maximum in order to position herself as strongly as possible internationally. That is something that has clearly strengthened her role, which may be causing certain concerns for Kurti, who cannot fully control her,” he told Kosovo Online.
However, he emphasized that this is a coordinated game between the key actors in Pristina.
“I still believe that this is a coordinated game between the key Albanian players. It would be beneficial for the opposition if new elections were held, but the question is what has changed in a few weeks for them to significantly improve their chances of forming a government, since they already had that opportunity last year,” Mitic added.
