The Municipal Assembly of North Mitrovica today adopted a decision to rename as many as 87 streets in the municipality. Milan Radojevic, a member of the Presidency of the Serbian List, pointed out that the decision was made without any consultation with the Serbian community and stressed that after the local elections, citizens will clearly express what they think about decisions taken solely to the detriment of the Serbian people.

“The illegitimate Municipal Assembly of North Mitrovica today decided to rename as many as 87 streets in North Mitrovica. Neither the media, nor—most importantly—the citizens of North Mitrovica, especially the Serbs who make up the absolute majority in this municipality, were informed about the session or the agenda,” Radojevic stated in a press release.

He emphasized that there were no public consultations nor any invitations for a public debate to ask citizens for their opinion on the matter.

“No one from the Serbian community took part in the work of the illegitimate commission, meaning that citizens learned about the commission’s work and the decisions of the illegitimate assembly through the Albanian-language media, since none of the Serbian media outlets received an invitation to today’s session,” Radojevic said.

He added that while decisions, like the people currently sitting in the assembly seats, may be temporary, what will remain behind them is shame and the sowing of division between communities.

“After the local elections, the citizens of North Mitrovica will consign this local administration to history and make it clear what they think of decisions made solely to the detriment of the Serbian people. After the elections, the new convocation of the local assembly will reflect the real will of the people and work in the interests of all communities that have lived together in North Mitrovica for decades, while harmful decisions such as this one will become a thing of the past,” Radojevic concluded.
