Diplomat Albert Prenkaj believes that the nomination of Eric Wendt as ambassador to Albania indicates that the United States is once again paying attention to this region, given that since the beginning of Donald Trump’s administration, bilateral relations in US embassies in the Western Balkans have been maintained by chargés d’affaires.

Prenkaj told Kosovo Online that, when it comes to the region, there was initially talk about appointing an ambassador to Belgrade.

“There was mention of Republican Mark Brnovich, and earlier there had been speculation about Rod Blagojevich as a possible ambassador to Serbia. The appointment of retired Lieutenant General Eric Wendt as US ambassador to Tirana can be seen as a return of US attention to our region,” Prenkaj said.

He also emphasized that Wendt’s nomination must be confirmed in the Senate.

“At a time of paradigm shifts on the international stage, when the US is in the process of beginning the implementation of the National Strategy ‘Monroe Doctrine/Western Hemisphere’, while the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz continues and the war between Israel, the United States and Iran is ongoing, it seems that the presence of a high-level diplomatic representative in Tirana, in addition to its symbolic aspect, is also politically significant. Of course, General Wendt must go through Senate procedures before taking up his post in Tirana,” Prenkaj said.
