Savkovic: Strong, Symbolic Message from Belgrade, but Without Significant Consequences
Senior Advisor at the ISAC Fund, Marko Savkovic, assessed that the Serbian government's decision to annul all of Pristina's decisions that are not in line with previously agreed Brussels agreements was expected. He noted that while it sends a strong symbolic message, it will not lead to significant consequences.
He added that there is no doubt about the powerful symbolic message, which could potentially become problematic in certain scenarios.
"It’s a strong message, a strong symbolic message being sent, but I don’t think it will lead to significant consequences. In fact, in some scenarios, it could become a problem tomorrow in establishing connections with those who think differently and want to send a different message," Savkovic explained.
He also warned that the suspension of any Brussels agreement would not be met with understanding or approval.
When asked if a more active role by the EU could help resolve the crisis in dialogue, this analyst expressed pessimism.
"My fear is that the new High Representative (Kaja Kallas) will not, I hope I'm wrong, devote the same level of attention that Mr. Borrell did. I believe the new High Representative will primarily focus on Ukraine, as that is the context she comes from, which is the persistence of the EU’s policy toward Russia, and then she will focus on the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip. But, we will see who her special envoy for dialogue will be, or whether Mr. Lajcak will continue his mandate," Savkovic concluded.
He further stated that the decision will have consequences in the areas under Belgrade’s effective control, but those making and implementing such decisions won’t operate within the territory of central Serbia.
“That’s where Belgrade’s ability to enforce something essentially ends,” Savkovic told Kosovo Online.
