Serb List delegation informed Due about the problems faced by the Serbian people in Kosovo
A delegation of the Serb List, led by its president Zlatan Elek, met today with the new head of UNMIK in Kosovo, Peter Due, to discuss the position of the Serbian people and, as stated in the press release, the increasingly difficult security and political situation in which Serbs find themselves.
The Serb List stated that its representatives informed the head of UNMIK about numerous problems that the Serbian people face on a daily basis, particularly pointing to institutional violence suffered by citizens, as well as by municipalities governed by Serbian mayors.
“It was emphasized that through various administrative measures, pressures and unilateral decisions, life for Serbs is being further complicated and the functioning of local self governments in areas where Serbs form a majority is being endangered,” the Serb List stated.
Special attention was drawn to the announced implementation of the law on foreigners and vehicles, which representatives of the Serb List believe must be an alarm for all representatives of the international community.
“If such an approach continues, there is a real danger that the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija will be further jeopardized, that thousands of our compatriots will be expelled, and that vital institutions will be endangered. At the meeting, it was reiterated that the Serb List provides full support to UNMIK and to the respect of UN Security Council Resolution 1244,” they emphasized.
Representatives of UNMIK were asked for the international community to more actively monitor the situation on the ground and to use its mandate to prevent measures which, it is stated, lead to further instability and endanger the basic rights of the Serbian people.
“The Serb List remains committed to protecting the interests of the Serbian people and will continue to inform international representatives about all the problems Serbs face and to demand concrete steps aimed at protecting the rights and security of our people,” the Serb List concluded.
