A Serbian citizen also kidnapped in the Hamas attack
In a terrorist attack by Hamas in northern Israel, a young man of Serbian descent, Alon Ohel, was kidnapped, and his mother, Idit Ohel, whose family is originally from Novi Sad, said for Kosovo Online that her son had been abducted after attending a music festival.
"He went to a peace festival with his friends , there were about 2500 people. Around six in the morning, there was a massive rocket attack on the area of the party. ,. With his friends, he drove to a shelter in which they tried to take cover.," she described what she heard from her son's friends.
In the shelter, she says, he was with 27 people of similar age, who tried to take cover from the rocket attack.
At one point, Hamas terrorists reached the shelter and tried to kill everyone inside. They threw seven grenades into the shelter.
"My son and one of his friends tried to catch the granades with their own hands and throw them out of the shelter to save people. One of them exploded in the shelter, injuring many people. After the explosion, the terrorists entered and dragged my son into the car. He was alive and taken along with two or three more people. They put them on a truck and drove away. His best friend saw it all. He was injured and he and his girlfriend pretended to be dead because the terrorists were shooting to kill everyone else in the shelter. After being taken to the hospital, he told us that Alon was kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip," she explained.
The Israeli Army has also confirmed this information.
"My 13 years old daughter kept calling his mobile number with the hope that he will answer. At around 11:30, a woman answered her call and said, 'They are killing us, come and save us'. I took the phone and asked her name, after which the connection was lost. We were scared because we didn't know where our son was,“ she said.
Idit says that since Alon is a Serbian citizen, she has asked for assistance from the Serbian Consulate in Israel.
"My mother's family is from Novi Sad. My grandfather was born there and, as a young boy of 15, he managed to escape at the beginning of World War II. His entire family was killed; only a part of the family in Belgrade survived," she added.
Alon and his younger brother planned to visit their family in Belgrade this month, their mother says.
She points out that her grandfather came to Israel to build a new life safe for his descendants, and now a new Holocaust has happened, with Alon being kidnapped.
"Alon is a young innocent citizen, he is our boy and we are like any other family. Our reality is completely torn by this horrible reality that we have to live. We don’t sleep, we wake up having nightmares.” she said with a trembling voice.
She hopes that Serbia will be able to help secure Alon's release from Hamas terrorists.
"I pray for him every day to endure and to know that we love him. I know that the Serbian Consulate wants him to be released. He has Serbian blood through my grandfather. I hope they will do everything to get him back," she said, not losing faith.
Idit Ohel points out that no one knows where the kidnapped people are, and Hamas is likely hiding them in tunnels. The Israeli Army is doing everything to save all Israelis, she said.
Idit says that no one has ever thought that something like this could happen.
"This crime has completely surprised us, we were not prepared for something like this. Israel has never had anything like this in its history. We still can't understand what has happened. There is too much suffering for us to comprehend. This crime traumatized our society. There is no family in Israel that doesn't know someone or has someone who was killed, kidnapped, or injured. Every house knows someone who has been a victim of terrorists," she said.
Israel and its people are strong and will survive this trauma, as well as many other things in history, Idit Ohel, who is waiting for good news about her son, said.
