Spahiu: Non-Aligned Movement has lost its former significance, but Serbia can use it to pursue its interests

The Non-Aligned Movement has lost some of its significance following the end of the bloc division of the world that emerged after the Second World War, but Serbia, as the successor to Yugoslavia, one of the Movement's founders, can still use its participation in it to pursue its interests, political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu says.

Ahead of the gathering in Belgrade marking 65 years since the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, Spahiu notes that new blocs have emerged in the meantime, but that the Movement still carries a certain political weight.

„Some other blocs have been created, but in any case, the Movement still means something. It is particularly significant for Serbia, so it can continue to use it to pursue its interests“, Spahiu said.

One of the possible topics of the meeting could also be the issue of Kosovo. Spahiu, however, believes that any discussion of the issue would not be of great significance for Belgrade.

„Many countries among the Non-Aligned Movement have recognized Kosovo's independence. This can be discussed, but it will not mean anything particularly significant for Serbia“, Spahiu said.

As he added, the voices of those countries could be heard in that case, but, he believes, they cannot change anything.
