Spahiu: Too many different political currents in Self-Determination
University professor Nexhmedin Spahiu tells Kosovo Online that there are too many different currents within Self-Determination, adding that it is easy to unite people when seizing power, but that "you can't be both liberal and conservative when you are in power."
"Self-Determination is a melting pot, with too many currents and too many different political ideologies involved – ranging from extreme conservatives to liberals, from religious individuals to atheists. Of course, it is easy to rally people when you want to take power, but once you have power, you have to show who you are aligned with because you can't be both liberal and conservative at the same time. You will end up betraying someone," Spahiu said, commenting on the recent departures of MPs from the ruling party.
He adds that many people have left Self-Determination, not just MPs but also party members.
"There is still plenty of time until February, but it remains that Self-Determination will be the leading party. With how many votes, we cannot say yet, but if they don’t secure an absolute majority, if they don’t get more than half of the votes, it is highly possible that the current opposition will form the government," Spahiu explained.
He believes it is possible that Self-Determination could win 40% of the vote but still lose power.
"Whether they will form a majority together with the non-Serb minorities in the future assembly is hard to say," he concluded.
