Until further notice Kosovo's accession to the Council of Europe is not going to happen

Kosovo's request for admission to the Council of Europe, as things currently stand, would not be considered in the bodies of this organization in the coming weeks either, Kosovo Online found out from diplomatic sources.

According to our information, Germany, which most insisted that this issue be "unlocked" already this week, will wait for May 2 and a meeting at a high political level in Brussels between the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and to possibly make a move towards the formation of the Community of Serb-majority Municipalities, before they again raise the subject of Kosovo's admission in the Council of Europe.

Pristina's request was not on the agenda of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe today, and there will not be an extraordinary session of this body until the end of the week to discuss this issue, which Germany and Italy insisted on the most. Iceland, as chairman of the Committee of Ministers, managed to resist these pressures.

In this way, it was avoided that the application of Kosovo appears at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which begins on Monday, April 24.

This means that Kosovo will almost certainly not be discussed before the Council of Europe Summit, which is being held on May 16 and 17 in Reykjavík, and most likely not even then, due to the complicated procedure when it comes to the request for membership, which must go through several steps in the Council of Europe bodies before it comes to consideration at the umbrella, ministerial level.
